Friar?s Balsam is used as an inhalant for symptomatic relief of cold such as blocked nose. It helps clear the nasal passage so that you can breathe easily. It can also be used as a mild antiseptic for treating minor cuts and wounds.
The preparation is highly inflammable and should be kept away from naked flame and out of the reach of children. It is contraindicated in patients with known sensitivity to any of the active or inactive ingredients. It should not be used as an inhalant or antiseptic on infants below the age three months.
The medication is intended for use in adults, the elderly and children above three months of age. To use, add one 5ml spoonful to 1pint of hot water and inhale the vapours. The water should be just hot enough but not boiling. Repeat if required at intervals of four hours. The formulation is also applied by the elderly, adults and children as an antiseptic on the skin. It is to be applied in an undiluted form on to the affected areas about twice in a day.
The active ingredients in the formulation is storax prepared BP 10.0%w/w and crushed Benzoin sumatra BP 10.0% w/v. It also contains as inactive ingredients Aloes powdered BP, Ethanol (96%) BP and sterile water.
